Description

Real data is messy, and a model is only as good as the work you do before and after it. Machine Learning Essentials is the course where you stop running toy examples and learn the practical craft: preparing real data, choosing between models, testing them honestly and finding structure when there are no labels. Everything comes together in a customer churn project that ends with a summary a business person can read.

What the course covers

• Preparing data for modeling: cleaning real-world data, encoding categories, scaling, creating new features and putting it all into a scikit-learn pipeline so that nothing leaks from the test set.
• Building and comparing five families of models: logistic regression, decision trees, K-nearest neighbors, random forests and gradient boosting, with an honest feel for when each one is a good choice.
• Evaluating and tuning: confusion matrix, precision and recall, ROC curves and AUC, cross-validation, imbalanced data, hyperparameter tuning and feature importance.
• Finding patterns without labels: K-means and how many clusters, dimensionality reduction with PCA and basic anomaly detection.

Follow-along style

Every lesson starts with a concrete problem (why is the accuracy 95 percent and the model still useless?), explains the idea in plain words with the exact definition alongside, and then walks through a code demo that you run in Google Colab. You change something, watch what happens and try the exercises, which come with hints. All printed outputs come from running the code, and the small datasets are included so that nothing depends on an external download.

The data and project you get

Four datasets are provided: a telecom churn table, a messy orders file for the cleaning lessons, a customer spending table for clustering and a data dictionary for the churn data. The closing project, Customer Churn Predictor, is broken into four guided lessons: load, clean and build a pipeline; compare, balance and tune the models; and finally the drivers of churn and the business summary. A starter notebook with TODOs and a worked solution notebook are included.
