Data Visualization and Reporting

Description

A good analysis that nobody understands changes nothing. This course is about the last step of analysis, and the one where most of the value is lost: turning results into charts, pages and words that a busy person can act on. It treats communication as something you can measure, so instead of style opinions you get numbers: the contrast ratio of a color, the lie factor of an axis, the readability score of a summary.

What changes in your work

• Charts: you choose them by the task of the reader, use color and contrast so that everyone can read them (including viewers with color vision deficiency), and recognize misleading axes, windows and dual scales before they leave your desk.
• Python: you build labeled, consistent charts with matplotlib, from figures and axes to small multiples, annotations and a reusable style, and export them for slides and print.
• Dashboards: you define KPIs with owners, targets and directions, plan a page with a clear hierarchy, build it from data with code and protect it with automated checks for freshness, duplicates and reconciliation.
• Reports: you write a report the reader can stop reading anywhere, an executive summary that leads with the answer, word claims by the strength of the evidence and plan a presentation that fits its time slot.

How it is taught

Each lesson explains the principle with a formula, a diagram and a worked number, and then proves it in code. Because charts are pictures, the lessons draw them without showing them and print their properties (bar heights in pixels, colors used, tick labels), so a chart becomes something you can test; in your own notebook you simply add a line to see it. Exercises have hints, and you can run every lesson on your own laptop or in Google Colab.

The data is the fictional shop Trailhead Outfitters: the orders, the order lines and a quarterly summary with a revenue target, so the KPIs, the story and the numbers stay consistent from the first lesson to the last.

The project

You build the Executive Performance Dashboard for a leadership meeting: audience and KPI definitions, checked numbers, trend and comparison charts, the page layout, a consistent accessible style, data checks that fire when the data is broken on purpose, a written summary with its uncertainty and a three-minute presentation plan. The starter notebook has 27 self-checks, and a worked solution is provided.
