2. Protect the Capacity
Brain capacity depletes with sustained effort and restores through sleep, movement, and psychological detachment. This isn't wellness fluff, it's neuroscience.
No amount of role redesign helps if people are running on empty.
Leaders who get this right subtract before they add: retiring legacy processes, canceling low-value meetings, building recovery into the operating rhythm.
3. Enable Focus
Workers now spend an average of just 47 seconds on a screen before shifting attention. It takes 23 minutes to fully refocus after each interruption.
AI is fast. But to unlock its potential, humans need uninterrupted time to evaluate what it produces. What a waste to have a team using AI to accelerate breakthrough work, only to have them undermined by relentless email threads.
4. Build the Skills AI Can't Replace
Junior analysts who used to spend hours building slides can now produce the same output in minutes. Massive efficiency gain.
But AI can't teach them how to read a skeptical client, reframe a failing argument on the fly, or remain steady in ambiguous conversations. Those muscles only develop through use.
Thinking without AI improves thinking with AI.
5. Design the Environment
Leaders who create brain-positive environments treat AI adoption as a cultural question, not just a technical one.
Imagine two identical AI pilots. One leader says, "Who knows if this will work?" Another says, "Here's a first-rate thinking partner for you," and actively discusses how to ensure the team has capacity to engage it.
Which group succeeds? The latter, of course.
The Real Transformation Agenda
Technology, operating models, and change management are essential. But they're not enough.
Organizations that treat their people like elite athletes, investing in recovery, flexibility, and skill building alongside intensity, outperform those that simply push harder.
